Thinking about adding another dog to your life? First, ask yourself these five questions:

1. Are you able to financially support another dog?

Another dog, another mouth to feed. As much as it seems easy to just add another dog, going from one dog to two makes the food go twice as fast meaning twice the amount you’ll be spending on food. And not just food, treats, toys, VET BILLS, etc. All these things can add up. It’d be best to sit down and talk numbers before deciding to add another furry companion to your family.

2. Do you have time for the new dog’s training and daily exercise?

Along with finances, your time spent with your pets will ultimately double as well. And it should! You should spend time with each dog individually working on training goals and exercising them daily. Don’t get another dog if you’re not willing to treat them as individuals and provide dedicated time to each of them.

3. Is your current dog trained?

If your current dog(s) are not trained, what bad habits will they be teaching the new addition? Training the dog you have will make your life SO much easier when adding another dog because not only do you have a dog that you can use in the new dogs training but you don’t have to now worry about two dogs being out of control and can focus all your attention on training the new furry friend! Trust me, don’t even think about that cute puppy you saw on social media until your current dog is quite literally “a walk in the park”.

4. WHY do you want another dog?

But seriously. Why?? 😂

We all love our furry family and love the idea of having more love in our homes but it benefits to take a moment and ask yourself, why? The only right answer is because YOU want another dog. Please please PLEASE do not get another dog so your current dog can have a “friend”. That can be a benefit but should not be the only reason.

5. Would you be okay if this dog turns out to be not exactly what you wanted?

Many times we get a dog with a certain expectation from them. Would you be okay if they didn’t live up to that? What would you do if they didn’t?

Over the part 2 years Echo had gotten progressively worse with his reactivity and aggression towards other dogs. It got so bad, he even attacked and bit another dog. I thought I was doing everything right, correcting him for reacting, rewarding when he doesn’t, avoiding other dogs, etc etc.

News flash: NONE of that works if your foundation, your relationship, is not solid. How can you trust your dog if your dog doesn’t even trust you? If they think they are the ones that have to control the difficult situations?

My own personal dog is proof of that! It has even transferred to our sport life as well. He’s more stable, happy, confident, and listens SO well (when his big mouth isn’t running of course 😂)

Meet Baloo!

Baloo is my newest foster. He is a Rottweiler/ Great Pyrenees around 3 years old. He is a great example of a dog that never was told “no” and always got his way (mainly due to his size!). He was supposed to be euthanized within 48 hours of being returned to the shelter because even though he is an amazing dog in every other way, he was “impossible” to keep contained. He would jump over the shelter kennels and break out of crates. While I have him, I’ll be working on not only getting him more comfortable with being crated but gaining a great working relationship with him by building trust and teaching him to listen to my direction. He is probably one of the worst cases I’ve come across when it comes to getting him into a crate (again, because of his size, he’s been extremely successful at getting his way previously). Once he IS in, he does settle really nicely after only being with me a few days.

Charlie and Beethoven went home today! They were here for 30 days and made amazing progress within that time.

They both left with a clear understanding of commands like “place”, “sit”, “down”, heeling on leash (and some off leash for Beethoven), as well as being able to train around other dogs and be completely neutral to them. They gained a strong working relationship with their handler that will easily be transferred to the owner. They are both confident in new situations, unbothered by things they used to think they had to control, and just freakishly happy dogs! The best part - their owner is committed and ready to maintain the training! Awesome job Charlie & Beethoven!!

Neutral dogs doing neutral activities 🙌

We’ve come a LONG way from those early days of Link fan girling every time he saw Echo, screaming bloody murder in his ear and body slamming him to the floor (poor Echo). Now, since they ONLY hang out during neutral activities, they have become a hell of a lot more normal around each other. Echo just likes his peace and quiet which he is entitled to (and which I advocate for him). Link is not allowed to lose his tiny little pea size mind around his favorite celebrity and has learned to ignore him when he’s in the room and instead pays attention to ME, sees ME as the most important thing in the room. Play comes through ME, fun comes through ME, everything good comes through ME, not another dog. As it should be!

Is your dog “spoiled”?
.

Giving your dog unlimited physical affection is not what THEY need or what some dogs even want. An extreme amount of affection is unnecessary and is actually damaging to your relationship with your dog.

A truly spoiled dog has an owner that has done extensive amount of research and training to know exactly what their dog’s true needs and desires are and doesn’t project their human emotions onto their dog to make themselves feel better.

What DO they need?
They need sleep. REAL sleep. Did you know that an adult dog needs 16-18 hours of sleep a day? The average dog gets around 8 hours or less! And I mean, REAL, uninterrupted SLEEP. Not them “sleeping” on your living room floor where they are still consciously aware of every move you make and never truly fall asleep. Not them being extremely exhausted and passing out on the couch after hours and hours of boredom. Real sleep.

So what is one way you can spoil your dog? Spoil them with sleep! Instead of all those moments of TRYING to fall asleep, put them away in an environment that’s suitable for true sleep! I know I sleep much better in a dark quiet room with a fan on… your dog does too! Having a the appropriate crate, dehumidifier, white noise machine, and air purifier is just bonus points for showing how spoiled your dog really is 😉

(To be clear - I do NOT allow dogs on the furniture and neither should you! Putting them on your furniture leads to problems with your relationship and will ultimately affect your training. Heidi was actually really confused that I put her on the couch with me… and was probably a mistake tbh but anything for the GRAM, RIGHT??)

Can your dog complete commands using just your voice? No hand signals? No pointing? No leash direction?

This CAN be achieved with a solid understanding of a command using a lot of repetition and rewarding with the proper timing and markers. But even with all of that, Echo would not reliably follow my commands without an insanely strong working relationship. If your dog looked at you like you were a GOD, they would be extremely happy to do ANYTHING you ask because, wouldn’t you?

And tricks are just tricks.
How are they on walks, in a crowd, around other dogs? Do they trust you? Want to be with you? Ignore everyone else and anything else because YOU are the most important thing in their goofy little world??

It was pretty obvious once I got the idea in my head to paint the queen herself on the wall of my training room. I never got the privilege of meeting Karma but I know how special she was and still is to @canine.karma.training and @canine.karma.isabela so it just made the most sense to honor her with this mural. Now she will be permanently on my wall as a reminder of what this company truely stands for.

It might seem small and unimportant but doing these kinds of sessions really does build a ton of confidence! I went into this session with a totally different goal in mind and ended up finding a weakness and working on it. She needed to learn to trust me in situations she’s not sure about and this was the perfect way to do so in that moment! Go Heidi!

This is Sunny, a 1 1/2 year old Blue Lacey! Him and his awesome owners are finishing up some private lessons with me. They are KILLING it!

While he is learning all the new skills like how to walk nicely on leash, stay on a “place” bed, recall, sit, down, etc, his owners are also learning how to confidently reward and correct him when necessary so they can continue to train him throughout his life.
It’s only been 3 lessons and he is already showing significant improvement in his behavior!

Stop forcing your dogs to interact with other animals they don’t want to (or need to) interact with!

If your dog is unfriendly with people or other dogs, the BEST thing you can do is advocate for your dog. Don’t make them go up to strangers and force an interaction that they don’t want or need.

It’s not okay for your dog to be freaking out, barking, lunging, pulling towards another dog or person. They need to know how to be able to coexist in the same room as someone they don’t like. Just like we do. Teach them how to be completely NEUTRAL to their surroundings instead!

They absolutely do NOT need to “play” with some random dog you met on the street. The most important thing in your dog’s life is YOU, and should always be YOU.

Thinking of adding a new furry friend to your family? Or maybe you already have and are struggling with getting them to settle in?
Here’s how to have a successful transition for both you and the new dog or puppy…
.
1. Don’t give them a ton of freedom.
The biggest mistake most pet parents make when adding a new pet to their family is allowing them to have full access to their home with no structure or boundaries DAY ONE. This allows for any and all bad behaviors to continue or worse - start. You want the dog to understand that these bad habits and behaviors will not be allowed from the very beginning. The first introduction to your home should ALWAYS be on leash and completely supervised. This way you have guaranteed control of the dog. Set some boundaries and don’t allow them on the couch or bed. This will be extremely important in building clarity in your relationship!
.
2. Crate train!
There’s no reason to wait to start crating a dog. In fact, if you start day one, they are more accepting of being crated since that is how it has always been. Even a dog that has never been crated in their life can be crate trained. A crate is not only their safe place but where they can sleep without interruption from loud noises, bright lights, etc. (The best place for their crate is in a quiet, DARK room where there’s little no foot traffic.)
.
3. Probably the most important tip is NEVER LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED!
Domestic dogs are not made to be unsupervised. A good rule of thumb is if you can’t pay attention or keep your eye on them: Put. Them. Away!
Set them up for success rather than failure.
.
4. Easy on the affection.
This is probably the most difficult one for many pet parents. If you immediate flood them with affection, this can actually hurt your relationship more than help. Most dogs don’t actually want the attention from strangers so immediately forcing them to be touched by you sets a rocky foundation from the start. That doesn’t mean you can’t pet your dog, just make sure to limit the amount of affection and give them space to adjust and warm up to you and their new home. Hand feed their meals and go on calm walks instead!
